DREAMSPELL / LAW OF TIME (Argüelles' Lunar-Solar Matrix)
48. DREAMSPELL / LAW OF TIME (Argüelles' Lunar-Solar Matrix)
I. View from Within the Tradition
Method's Worldview Time is not a mechanical flow but a living matrix organised according to the "Law of Time" (T×E=Art). The universe pulses at the rhythm of 13:20 — the rhythm of the Galaxy, reflected in the 260-day cycle (the Tzolkin). Every person is born into a specific "Kin" — a cell of the 13×20 matrix — which determines their Solar Seal and Tone of Creation: the archetype and rhythm of their incarnation. Modern Gregorian time (12:60) is mechanical and "dead"; the Law of Time (13:20) is alive and synchronic.
What Is Considered Reality The 20 Solar Seals and 13 Tones are the basic archetypal principles governing the quality of every day. Coincidences of dates and events are not accidental: they are signals from the living matrix of time. Every person is a "Galactic Being" carrying a specific Kin code.
What Is an Event Within the Method An event is a synchronic encounter with a specific Kin or Wavespell (a series of 13 days). Significant events "coincide" with matrix transitions: cycles of 260 days, 52 years. Synchronicity is the chief mark of a significant moment.
Role of the Subject Every person is a "Galactic Being" with a specific Kin. Their task is to become aware of their code, to live in synchrony with the matrix of the Law of Time, and to become a participant in the "Galactic Awakening."
Purpose of the Method To determine the personal Kin code (Solar Seal, Tone, Wavespell), to become aware of synchronic connections in life, and to practise the 13-moon calendar as a tool of daily navigation.
II. How the Method Works
Origin Created by José Argüelles (Valum Votan), USA, 1987–1990. Key publications: "The Mayan Factor" (1987), the game-system "Dreamspell" (1990). Traditional Mayan scholars and communities do not recognise Dreamspell as an authentic Mayan system — it is an authorial neo-esoteric reworking of the Tzolkin.
What It Is Used For Diagnosis of the personal Kin code; interpretation of the archetypes of the Solar Seals and Tones; daily navigation through the 13-moon calendar; discovery of synchronicities between dates and events.
Data Source Date of birth — for calculating the Kin according to the 13×20 matrix.
Interpretation Principle Cyclical: the 260-day Tzolkin and the 13-moon year as the primary rhythmic structures. Archetypal: the 20 Solar Seals and 13 Tones as symbolic principles. Synchronicity as a method of reading events through the matrix.
Temporal Scope Moment of birth (Kin); the 260-day cycle; the 52-year "Solar Round"; the 26,000-year "Great Cycle" in Argüelles' conception.
Predetermination Moderate. The Kin code establishes the archetype, but its realisation depends on the subject's "awakening." Emphasis on synchronicity: the current moment is always open.
Scale of Applicability Individual and collective (the global 13-moon calendar as a "synchronisation" of community).
Limitations Not an authentic Mayan system — Argüelles substantially reworked the Tzolkin. Disputes about the starting point yield different Kins in different tools. High quasi-religious charge of the "Galactic Awakening" concept.
Ethical Risks Formation of dependency on "synchronicities" and "the matrix" in decision-making. Cultural appropriation of Mayan culture without the consent of its traditional bearers. Eschatological concepts (2012 and the like).
Degree of Verifiability Low. Synchronicity as a principle cannot be falsified. The historical link to the Mayan tradition has been refuted by Mayanist scholars.
III. Place Among Other Methods
Methods with Similar Data Source Mayan Astrology (#22) uses the same Tzolkin imagery. Date of birth as the sole input parameter relates to numerological systems (#5, #46, #47).
Methods with Similar Operating Principle The cyclicality of the 260-day Tzolkin is close to Mayan Astrology (#22). The archetypal structure of the Solar Seals resembles the archetypes of Tarot (#20) and Jungian Archetypes (#11). Synchronicity as a method is a common feature with Tarot (#20) and the I Ching (#6).
Key Difference from Similar Methods Unlike traditional Mayan Astrology (#22), Dreamspell is an authorial neo-esoteric system, not a historical reconstruction. The concept of two temporal registers (13:20 alive vs. 12:60 dead) is unique in the Atlas. The global collective scale ("synchronisation of humanity") distinguishes this method from the majority of individual systems.
Relationship to Predetermination Moderate determinism through the Kin code; emphasis on synchronicity and navigation. Closer to F4 (navigation) than to strictly prognostic systems.
Parallel Application Possible With Mayan Astrology (#22) — shared imagery with strict delineation of the historical and Argüellesian versions. With Tarot (#20) — both work with archetypes in a specific moment of time.
