55. CLASSICAL GEOMANCY

I. View from Within the Tradition

Method's Worldview The world is understood as a system of hidden correspondences between chance and order. A random action — striking dots on sand, paper, or a screen — reveals the structure of the current situation through 16 symbolic figures.

What Is Considered Reality Reality is a configuration of forces and influences that can be expressed through 16 archetypal figures. They describe not a fixed state but a process.

What Is an Event Within the Method An event is a configuration of probabilities arising at the moment of the question. It is expressed through the placement of figures in the geomantic shield chart.

Method Focus symbolic figures and their interactions within the geomantic shield chart. The task is to determine the structure of the situation, the dynamics of its development, and the probable outcome.

Role of the Subject The subject formulates the question and initiates the generation of symbols. They do not create the answer but set the process of its manifestation in motion.

Role of Time Time is fixed at the moment the figures are created. The shield chart describes the current phase of the situation and its near-term dynamics.

Purpose of the Method Analysis of the state of affairs, identification of hidden factors, assistance in decision-making, assessment of probable outcomes.

Language and Key Concepts Figure, dots, Mothers, Daughters, Nieces, Witnesses, Judge, Reconciler, shield chart.

II. How the Method Works

Origin Traditional. Originated in the Arab-Islamic tradition as ʿIlm al-Raml — "the science of the sand." From the 12th century onward, it spread through medieval Europe via Latin translations.

What It Is Used For Diagnosing the structure of a situation, interpreting a symbolic configuration, probabilistic forecasting, assistance in decision-making.

Data Source Symbolic generation of figures: the querent creates random dots, and the parity of these dots forms the four Mothers — the base figures of the shield chart. The second source is the subject's meaningful query.

Interpretation Principle Combinatorial (the shield structure is built according to mathematical rules), processual (the levels of the shield show the development of the situation), symbolic (each of the 16 figures carries an archetypal meaning).

Temporal Scope The moment of figure generation and the near-term period of the situation's development.

Predetermination A probabilistic system. The shield chart shows tendencies, not an inevitable outcome.

Scale of Applicability From individual questions to the analysis of collective and economic situations.

Limitations Dependence on the accuracy of the generation procedure and the interpreter's level. Cultural differences in interpretation.

Ethical Risks Shifting responsibility for decisions onto a symbolic system. Dependency on the divinatory procedure.

Degree of Verifiability Low in the strict scientific sense. The method belongs to the category of symbolic systems of interpretation.

III. Place Among Other Methods

Methods with Similar Data Source Symbolic generation is also used in I Ching and runic systems. The distinctive feature of geomancy is the generation of multiple interconnected symbols forming a structured map (the shield chart).

Methods with Similar Operating Principle The combinatorial structure of the shield chart intersects with numerological and astrological systems. The archetypes of the figures intersect with Tarot and Runes.

Key Difference from Similar Methods Geomancy describes a map of the situation, not a map of the personality. The focus is on a specific question, not on a person's character.

Relationship to Predetermination A probabilistic system. The shield chart shows the direction of the process, not an inevitable outcome.

Parallel Application Possible Compatible with astrology (through the planetary correspondences of the figures), I Ching (through a symbolic model of dynamics), and decision-making practices.
