Lo Shu

洛書 · Luo Shu / Lo Shu (Chinese)

RU: Ло Шу

Lo Shu (洛書, "the Book of the River Lo") is the Chinese 3×3 magic square in which the numbers 1–9 are arranged so that every row, column and diagonal sums to 15.

Fixed structure. The cells of the square:

  • 4 — 9 — 2
  • 3 — 5 — 7
  • 8 — 1 — 6

The Legend of the Turtle

Origin. According to legend, the square was discovered on the back of a turtle that emerged from the Lo River during the reign of the legendary Emperor Yu — around 2200 BCE. In the Chinese tradition it is closely linked with the I Ching, Feng Shui, Traditional Chinese Medicine and numerology — as an instrument for understanding the balance between forces and directions.

Use as a Diagnostic Tool

The digits of a date of birth (or a significant event) are placed into the cells of the matrix according to their numerical value:

  • Repeated digits create several marks in a single cell — an amplified quality
  • Missing digits leave empty cells — zones requiring development

The three planes of development. Filled rows, columns and diagonals indicate developed planes:

  • 4-9-2 — the mental plane
  • 3-5-7 — the emotional plane
  • 8-1-6 — the practical plane

Parallel Traditions

Not tied to one school. In Errarium, Lo Shu is regarded as an independent numerical instrument that exists in parallel across several traditions.

20th-century Indian adaptation. In the 20th century several Indian schools of numerology (notably J.C. Chaudhry and his Numerovision system) adapted the square as an auxiliary birth-diagnostic tool, overlaying its cells with Vedic planetary symbolism. This fusion is not classical Vedic practice, but a modern synthesis.

The Strength of Lo Shu — Visual Clarity

Simultaneous visibility. Lo Shu is valued for its visual clarity: a person's numerical configuration becomes visible all at once, not sequentially. Empty cells become a map of karmic lessons; filled cells become a map of resources.

Translation note

Retain as 'Lo Shu' or 'Luo Shu'. Explain as 'Lo Shu magic square' in first mention. Do not translate the Chinese characters literally in running text.

False friends / common mistakes

  • ·

Lo Shu ≠ ведическая нумерология — квадрат имеет китайское происхождение и независимую традицию применения; его использование в индийской нумерологии — синтез XX века, а не классическая ведическая практика
