PYTHAGOREAN SQUARE (PSYCHOMATRIX)

The Pythagorean Square (also called the Psychomatrix or Numerical Square) is a numerological system widely used in the post-Soviet space. Despite its name, it has no direct connection to Pythagorean philosophy: the system was developed in the USSR by Alexander Alexandrov (a pseudonym) in the 1970s-80s and gained mass distribution through samizdat and later through the internet. Virtually no equivalent systems exist in the West.

The method works as follows: all digits from the full date of birth are written out, computed "additional numbers" are added according to a specific algorithm, and the resulting set of digits is distributed across a 3x3 grid in positions 1 through 9. Each position corresponds to a specific quality: 1 — willpower and character, 2 — energy, 3 — potential and scientific interest, 4 — health, 5 — logic and intuition, 6 — industriousness, 7 — spirituality and luck, 8 — responsibility and duty, 9 — memory and intellect. The number of identical digits in a position describes the degree to which that quality is expressed.

The system is also read along "diagonals": the main diagonal (1-5-9) is called will, the secondary diagonal (3-5-7) is spirituality, the horizontal line (2-5-8) represents family, and the vertical (4-5-6) represents stability. Additionally, a life "goal" and "mission" are calculated. This provides a fairly detailed interpretive framework with a minimum of arithmetic operations, which explains the method's popularity as an entry point into numerology.

In Errarium, the Pythagorean Square (#46) represents the post-Soviet numerological cluster. Its closest analogue is Syutsai (#53) as another system with a matrix-based representation of birth date digits. The fundamental difference from classical Pythagorean numerology (#5): the latter yields a single "destiny number," while the Square produces a matrix of nine indicators, creating a more detailed, though fundamentally different, portrait.
